Steam Trains / Locomotives
Richard Trevithick is credited with building the World's first steam engine locomotive at the Pen-y-darren Ironworks in Wales,Uk in 1804. Encasing one of his steam engines in a chassis with wheels, the engine hauled eleven tonnes of iron ore over a distance of four miles on modified rails.
'Locomotive number 1', built by the legendary George Stephenson and his son Robert was the first steam locomotive to carry people on a public Railway, the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1825, followed by the first Inter-City Railway, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway in 1830.
Tragically, at the same event, William Huskisson, a British Statesman and Member of Parliament for Liverpool gained the dubious honour of being the first passenger killed in a Railway accident.
He was struck by Stephenson's 'Rocket' Locomotive at the opening ceremony of the Liverpool to Manchester Railway in 1830 with the Prime Minister, the Duke of Wellington in attendance and died later the same evening from his injuries.
