The Pipe-Major must complete a 28 week course at the'Army School of Bagpipe music and Highland drumming' to be eligible for the honourary title.
The position is an appointment and not a rank.
Playing his Bagpipes the Pipe-Major would 'pipe' his Company as they went 'over the top' and across the trenches.
Several Pipers received Gallantry awards including the Victoria Cross for their heroism and many gave their lives on the battlefields of the Great War.
