Bicycles
The German Baron, Karl Von Drais is widely credited with inventing the bicycle in 1817. It had two wheels and was steerable but without a crank, chain or pedals. The rider sat on the saddle and propelled himself forward by his feet, just like small children do when they learn to ride. Fifty years later saw the introduction of the 'High Wheel', the official name of what became better known as the 'Penny Farthing' of the 1870's. Speed was improved by having a large front wheel (the Penny) and a small back wheel (the Farthing). It is no surprise that they were sold predominantly to young men as the height of the saddle was around 5 feet from the ground. They were incredibly dangerous and falls from this height often resulted in fatalities.
Public perception shifted after the invention of the 'Safety bicycle' in 1885. With two wheels of normal size and a chain driven back wheel, (pretty much the bicycle we know today), the safety bicycle totally replaced all other styles and quickly became an everyday transport tool for millions world-wide.
As a footnote the first electric bicycle is credited with being built in 1897!
