Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965)
Many believe that Winston Churchill's 'finest moment' came in a speech he gave in June 1940. The German Army was rampaging unchecked across the whole of Europe and only France and Great Britain stood in her way, but France was in trouble. If France fell then Britain would stand alone against the might of Nazi Germany. Morale in the UK was low. Every man, woman and child understood that Britain was in great danger. Churchill knew he had to tell the Public that France was about to fall and that Britain would almost certainly face the threat of Invasion. He also had to inspire the Country with his unshakeable belief that Britain and the Free World would eventually triumph.
Churchill delivered a speech in the House of Commons  on June 4th 1940,  repeated on BBC News Channels that evening  that will be remembered as long as human history lasts.
Please indulge me for repeating part of it.
''We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end.
We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air,
we shall defend our Island, whatever the cost may be.
We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender''.

France did fall. We did fight on.
